John Arthur Russell was born in Greeley, Colorado to Earle and Cleda (Munson) Russell on October 22, 1948. He passed away on Monday, November 18, 2019 in Greeley.

John attended Greeley Schools, graduating from Greeley Central High School in 1966. He went to Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado and then finished his Bachelor and Master’s degree at University of Northern Colorado, majoring in fine arts. After graduating from college, he entered the Army, serving from 1970-1972 and was stationed in Berlin.

In 1969, he married Nancy Roukema (Critchfield) and had a daughter, Lara, his little “LD Babes” who he adored. Nancy and John later divorced. In 1991, John met and Barbara Hines and later would marry and spend the rest of his life with. Together Barb and John had their own property management company and later HOA management company.

John was a talented artist specializing in ceramics. He had a studio, Novy Mir Arts, in Greeley for many years. John had a zest for life. He climbed many 14-ers including one of his favorites, Longs Peak, which he climbed numerous times. He enjoyed cycling throughout his younger years and did many cycling tours with good friends. He had his pilot’s license and had a love of flying; he was also a flight instructor. He loved going to Rocky Mountain National Park and looked forward to the annual Father’s Day trip with his daughter and grandson. He enjoyed going to the UNC Bear’s football games with Barb and spending time with good friends and family including Sunday night movie nights. John had a special connection with his grandson Ridge who he called RJ. He and his grandson spent many happy hours playing cards, going to the movies and Chuck E. Cheese. John loved to fix things and was incredibly smart, always tinkering with something. John never met a cat or dog that didn’t absolutely adore him. He was so passionate about animals and the welfare of animals, he dedicated many years of service to the Weld County Humane Society. John was loved and respected by all who knew him. He will be missed beyond measure.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Hines); and his daughter, Lara (Tim) Wiley; and his adored grandson, Ridge John Archer Wiley,; as well as siblings, Sharon Russell, Susan Waller, Richard Russell; aunt and uncle, Polly and John Cronin; mother-in-law Marnie Hines, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; nephew, Daniel John Waller; and brother, James Lavern Russell.

Life Celebration will be held on December 2, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Adamson with a reception to follow.

John Russell was a family friend for over 50 years. He attended Northeastern Junior College and studied art in general and ceramics in particular. Wm Dick Brown was the ceramics instructor, and like many of the art students, John became a close family friend through the years. Our sons Tobey and Brad were just babes when they fell under his spell. It didn't hurt that John's wife at the time had family in the area! When Dick left NJC and built a studio, John came to Sterling and built the giant gas fired kiln for him. Then as John had become a production potter, we commissioned him to make a set of dishes for us. Even Today, when Dick has cereal for breakfast, he chooses a bowl that John made over one of his own. John became a long distance bike rider, the kind of bike you pedal yourself! Just a week before John died (so unexpectedly) he and our son Brad discussed the merits of Trek Bikes. John became an aviator and gave us all rides over the northeastern plains. There were many years when we didn't see John, but we knew whatever he was doing, he was totally absorbed. When his daughter Lara was born, the Russells joked that she could be Dick's girl since he only had sons. We enjoyed meeting grandson Ridge several times, again just recently when he greeted us with a gentlemanly bow. John got a kick out of me introducing him to others as our 50 year friend. Now John, you will be our forever friend.

MY name is Gary Kessler and I worked with John and Barb doing maintenance work for them in their property management and HOA management business. I consider John a good friend and it was a true joy to get to know him and work with him and develop a friendship that I cherished. John was always very kind and always smiling and laughing. I was amazed at how much knowledge he actually had about so many things. We always compared grandpa stories about our grand kids and it was obvious he was crazy about his. I regret not spending more time with John and will miss him. I pray the Lord would comfort and lift up Johns family through this time and encourage you all to find peace in the grace and mercy of Jesus our savior. I'm grateful to have known John and was blessed by his friendship. I am sorry for your loss.

My heart is reaching out to you, Barb, the few times I met John at Lake Ridge Condo's, it was apparent he was a big part of your life, working side by side and a go to person when a little extra advice or expertise was needed. He was there to meet the challenge and lend a helping hand. John will be missed; remember, those we hold most dear never truly leave us… John lives on in the kindness he showed, the knowledge he shared, and the many silent expressions. For as long as there is a memory John will be in our hearts. With friends and family beside you. May you find peace and comfort. Sending a Hug!

John will be missed by all - a gentle spirit with a warm smile and always a joy to be with.
For some reason, I can't get the thought of his Eclipse trip out of my mind. Perhaps it was the shear impulsiveness of the trip or the thought of the unexpected lengthy drive home - or maybe just you, Barb, telling the story. It brings a smile.
Praying for the entire family at this difficult time.
