Obituary

Charles Melvin Trembath, 88, of Johnstown passed away at his home with his family by his side. He was born September 18, 1931 in Greeley to William John and Stella Malissa (Meeker) Trembath.

He grew up in the Platteville and Gilcrest areas where he farmed with his father until the 1940’s when he went to work for the Run Service Station. After moving from Greeley to Denver in 1955, Mel worked for the Denver Steel Company for three years and later as a mechanic at the American Can Company for 17 years while also working part-time at Valley View Hospital in Thornton as a painter and paper hanger. In July 1974, the family moved to Johnstown and owned and operated Johnstown Liquor and Johnstown Pool Hall. He then entered the Custom Hay Stacking business with Bill Claus for three years and then branched off on his own for two years before retiring. He started back into the hay business before retiring again at the age of 62.

He married Shirley Thomas and they had two children, Pat and Bob. He later married Ruby Hockley on April 4, 1951 at his parents’ home in Gilcrest and they would have celebrated 69 years this April.

A fisherman and hunter, he enjoyed time at Miracle Mile, Wyoming. He was an avid Cushman collector, belonging to the Cushman Club and served as President for a number of years.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby of their home in Johnstown, children; Pat (Bill) Dugan of New Mexico, Billie Jean Utter and Ted Eugene Trembath both of Johnstown, 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren,a brother, Bill Trembath of Texas and sisters, Margaret Vaughn of Kit Carson and Elsie Herman of Johnstown, and a half sister, Linda K. Trembath Romero.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Baker and a son, Bob Nelson.

Even though I only knew Mel for a little over 20 years I felt I had known him all my life. He became an instant friend and I have never known anyone as kind and fun to be around. I enjoyed the time he helped me on my scooter, and the scooter rides, and all the stories he shared with Jo Ann and I about his life experiences. I looked forward to our phone conservations each month and the discussions we had. He would always share his knowledge with me, and I learned a lot from him about politics. He was very knowledgeable about this country’s way of life. I will always have special memories of Mel and I am a better person for having him in my life. Jo and I will miss him greatly.
Rest in peace my friend,
Ron Bunker

Mel was one of a kind, a wonderful man that I was so blessed to call my friend. I have many fond memories of him and Ruby, and he will always have a special place in my heart. He will be missed.
