Obituary

Jean Leinani Swearingen Martin was born February 17, 1948 in Honolulu, Hawaii to parents Gordon Clifford and Louise Adeline (Poe) Swearingen. Although her legal name was Jean, she was known to all as Nani.

She lived the first couple years of her life in Hawaii and moved with her family to their orchard and farm outside South Fork, Missouri. She had many great memories of that time in her life, including learning to keep score of MLB games with her Grandfather PJ while listening to the St. Louis Cardinals on the AM radio. She often spoke fondly of her time on the farm and in the orchard with her family, siblings and friends. She attended a small rural one-room school there where her mother was the teacher for all grades.

In 1965, Nani and her mother moved to Center, CO as her mother had taken a job as a counselor in a local school district in the San Luis Valley. In her high school years, she went on a date with future husband Nelson Martin that both would later describe as their worst dates ever. Somehow, they began dating again a year and a half later. They would be married on October 14, 1967 and their union would be blessed with three sons; Michael, Aaron and Sam. Nani and Nelson celebrated their 50th Wedding anniversary on October 14, 2017.

Nani finished her teaching degree at Adams State College and secured a job teaching in Monte Vista, CO. She taught there until the family relocated to Northern Colorado in 1976. She began teaching in the Johnstown-Milliken school district as a 5th grade teacher. She moved to teaching middle school math and found her passion. She taught in the RE-5J district for 27 years and retired in 2005. In those years, she raised three sons and was a pivotal part of the family’s small beef and tomato empire. In her retirement she enjoyed gardening, her kids and grandkids, and beekeeping. Nani passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, June 2, 2021.

She was preceded in death by her father, Gordon, her mother, Louise and her sister, Dona. Nani is survived by her husband Nelson, sons; Michael (Nancy) Martin, Aaron Martin, Sam (Kendra) Martin; her grandchildren; Mikalya Romero, Jordan Yonce, Sophia Martin, Rylee Martin, Korbin Martin, and Samuel Martin; and her great grandchildren Kellan and Cree Romero.

As an educational force in the area, the loudest voice at a high school basketball game, and the original Parrot Head in Colorado, her presence in the community will be missed.

Burial was held at the Pony Cemetery in Pony, Montana with a Life Celebration from 10:00 a.m. to 12’noon, Saturday, June 19, 2021 at Sunrise Park, Johnstown.

Memorial gifts may be made to “St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital” in care of Adamson, 2000 47th Ave., Greeley, CO 80634. Friends may leave condolences at AdamsonCares.com.
