Obituary

William ”Bill” Lee Johnson, 72, of La Salle CO, passed away December 12, 2020, at Northern Colorado Medical Center of an Aortic Dissection. He was born March 4, 1948, in Cortez, CO to William Rosco and Anna Mae Johnson.
Bill basically grew up on a horse, even riding one to school. His dad would volunteer him to ride other people's horses that were wild and not broke. That’s where he learned to sit a saddle.
During his Little Britches rodeo years, he competed in all events except saddle bronc riding. In his college years, Bill entered amateur rodeos mostly competing in Bareback and Bull Riding. It was during this time he met the love of his life, Lenna Kaye Mitchell of Moffat, CO. They were married September 5, 1969 in Alamosa. CO.
In December 1970, Bill and Kaye traveled to Greeley, CO to spend Christmas with Bill’s parents. While in Greeley, Bill went to a job interview at Monfort Feedlot in Gilcrest, CO. He was hired and started work in January 1971. Bill stayed with the company though many mergers and worked in various positions until May 25, 2011.
Bill continued competing in bareback and bull riding events until his boys were about 3 and 5 years old. He then started team roping which became his passion from then on. When his boys were old enough, he taught them and Kaye how to rope.
When not rodeoing together, Bill and the boys focused on their game fowl business. Bill enjoyed spending this time with his boys. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and following his grandkids to their rodeo, livestock, and sporting events.
Bill is known for his smile and hugs when greeting those he knew. He always had a big heart and was always willing to help anyone including being an organ and tissue donor.
Survivors are his wife, Lenna Kaye of La Salle, a daughter Julie Huff (Kevin) of Centennial, and two sons Kip Johnson (Jane) and Hank Johnson (Jennifer) both of La Salle; 6 grandchildren Stacie Bandy, Taylor Johnson, Jamie Johnson, Kenzie Johnson, Kaleb Johnson and Jake Johnson; siblings Sharon Johnson (Rick) Pagosa Springs, CO, Libby Allinder (Jim) Greeley, CO, Shane Johnson (Cindy) Highland Ranch, CO, Roian Bullock (Charlie) Greeley, CO and several nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents William Rosco and Anna Mae Johnson and his father-in-law Robert Mitchell.
A Celebration of Life will be held January 3, 2021, 1pm at Rick Montera’s Arena 34059 CR 33, Greeley, CO. The service will be live streamed for those unable to attend; a link will be posted on Bill’s Facebook page and his Adamson Chapels memory page.

Billy Lee and his sweet family gave me some of my favorite nicknames, Jessie Jo, Messy Jessy, my two favorites. When I was in college, I spent most of my time at Monfort's Gilcrest Feedlot. The work was interesting, but the people were the best. Billy made sure we worked hard but a good laugh was needed too. He was special and I
feel for all his loved ones. Joanne Goode
